"The Bat" – the unsurpassable Vienna operette classique

XVIII century Vienna is the city of theatres. „If a theatre had not existed, the Austrians would have invented one“, says theatre critic H. Laube (1806-1864).

The word operette appeared for the first time in mid of the 18 century as a short comedy accompanied by music and songs; but only due to Mr. Strauss it became „an easy, jolly, optimistic, nicely-costumed and brightly sounding musical comedy.“

The operettes by J. Strauss are full of dances: polka, walts, gallope, chardash – all these dances compliment to the action, enrich the festive feelings, elevate romantically high spirits and jubilee.

„The Bat“ is the third operette written by J.Strauss. it was written in 1847. Libretto easily traces down to the French author R.Benedix‘ comedy „ The Prison“ and the popular vaudeville by H. Meilhac and L. Halevy „The Christmas Eve“. K.Haffner and R. Genée adapted the libretto providing it with the Vienna-style colouring.

The first night of „The Bat“ was held in „An der Vien” theatre, however, it did not enjoy at the time the great success and after the 17 performances its full score was put to the archives. Only after it celebrated the hundredth performance, the Vienna audience returned this one of the most perfect operettes onto its theatres‘ stages.
